The Penn State NROTC AIG Scholarship was created in 2017 through the initiative of the PSU NROTC Class of 2017. It was the desire of this graduating class to support a midshipman not in receipt of a national government funded NROTC scholarship. The Seniors of 2017 raised $1,300 and the PSU NROTC AIG raised an additional $1,200 to provide a $2,500 award to one of these midshipman. The AIG continued to fully fund this scholarship annually.
The AIG established a goal in 2019 to endow the annual scholarship through the Penn State Alumni Association. The AIG had to raise a minimum of $50,000 to meet that goal. We are happy to say that we reached that goal by the end of 2021 (much earlier than expected) and in early 2022, we transferred an excess of $60,000 and established the endowment, now officially called the Penn State Naval ROTC Alumni Award.
This Scholarship Endowment is now managed directly by Penn State's Office of Giving and a scholarship board of NROTC unit staff members in accordance with award criteria established by the PSU NROTC AIG. However, the AIG continues to support this effort and have established our next goal to cross the $100,000 threshold which would increase the annual award to approximiately $5000.
As you consider any end-of-year giving options, your RMD tax strategies, or your annual support to PSU, please consider making the PSU NROTC Alumni Award a part of your philanthropy plane Penn State Alumni Association in accordance with award criteria established by the PSU NROTC AIG.
