JOHN RICHARD FISCHER 1964,
Conflict: VIETNAM WAR Status: UNACCOUNTED FOR
Captain John Richard Fischer, who joined the U.S. Marine Corps from Pennsylvania, served with Marine Attack Squadron 224, Marine Aircraft Group 12, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 9, 1966, piloting an A-4 Skyhawk (bureau number 150020), Captain Fischer departed Chu Lai Air Base, South Vietnam, on a night bombing mission in the area around Chu Lai. As he left the target, he contacted air traffic control and told them that his mission was complete. A short time later, three outposts west of Chu Lai reported hearing small arms fire and seeing an explosion. Captain Fischer's aircraft never returned to base. A search was carried out the next day, but failed to find a crash site, Captain Fischer, or his remains. Today, Captain Fischer is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. His name is also inscribed along with all his fallen comrades on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC.
